Recent ASTM Meeting In Reno

ASTM Paintball

At the recent ASTM meeting in Reno, many paintball standards were submitted. Some were new standards, submitted for initial consideration by small task groups. Other standards were already in place, but were being reviewed for updates and revisions. My intent at this meeting was to submit a proposed standard paintball player safety briefing, to an ASTM subcommittee for consideration. In the past, I believed that a player safety briefing should only include information which would be important to players participating in properly supervised games. "Keep it simple" is usually good advice. However, the standard briefing I am proposing at this time would include additional information, which would enable players to recognize unsafe games. I believe it is critical that players be trained to understand the essential ingredients of safe paintball games, whether played at a regulated field, or in their own "backyard". Persons who wish to comment on the proposed new player safety briefing are welcomed to visit the industry forum on this website.  Forums are open to registered users of www.paintball.org.

There were two proposed standards which are of interest to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). The new proposed standard for paintball CO2 cylinder warning labels was moved on to simultaneous subcommittee and full commottee ASTM ballot, and is expected to be finalized at the November, 2005, meeting.  The proposed standard for paintball CO2 cylinder valves was moved on to sucommittee ballot.

The marker standard was revisited, with a proposal to add a maximum allowable rate of fire and a new "ramping" designation. However, since certain aspects of the proposed revision were contested, it was not moved on to ballot.

It was also proposed that the barrel plug standard be revised, to require more shots during the performance testing, in order to more accurately approximate actual field conditions. A new twist-lock type barrel plug was also demonstrated by a manufacturer.
