CFOA Pulls 108 Teams To Myrtle Beach

108 of the National Paintball Supply CFOA's loyal and dedicated five-man teams braved thunder, lightning and several inches of rain to complete the 2005 Myrtle Beach Open on schedule July 30 and 31, 2005. In addition to the league's best, several new faces came to Adventure Beach Paintball and added their input to the event, including Aftershock's Mike Paxson, who refereed the rookie event Saturday and played the amateur event Sunday, winning the first CFOA in which he played, alongside his teammates on Short Bus Factory, a pick-up team of league players. Legendary player Rocky Cagnoni also joined the paid CFOA reffing crew for both Saturday and Sunday, adding his years of experience to the reffing staff and clearly improving the event with his ability and personality. Bea Youngs played her first CFOA with a pick-up team called the "Death Faries" as well, while members of Bad Company, the Femme Fatales and Trauma also joined the fray. Saturday saw a line of thunderstorms move over the field dropping bolts of lightning close enough to warrant the league suspending play. Games began a short time later, having given the players enough time to browse the numerous sponsor/vendors on-site and enjoy hot pizza provided by Dominos' on-site kitchen trailer. Vendors at Myrtle Beach included Planet Eclipse, with a full compliment of techs and product in a large tent, Reactive, Paintball Kingdom, National Paintball Supply, Paintball Central, DerDer Productions, Ground Zero Paintball and Energy Fizz, offering free samples of their new energy drink. The Nobodys won the rookie portion of the Myrtle Beach Open handily, ahead of the Zero Kidz, Revelation and Last Call. Sunday dawned cooler than Saturday, but as the preliminary rounds came to a close a thunderstorm again rolled into the area suspending play. While the lightning moved away and games began again, the rain refused to leave the area and dumped several of inches of water onto the venue throughout the afternoon, waterlogging the staging area. As the fields at Adventure Beach were crowned and drained, the driest places at the tournament were the XBall fields on which play continued. In the amateur division, Short Bus Factory proved that anything can happen on the paintball field, as a pick-up team led by Mike Paxson of Aftershock won the event, ahead of Gridlock Red, Fat City and the Beach Bums, comprised of the most women ever to participate in a CFOA amateur final on one team, three members of the Femme Fatales. In the novice division, Mutiny, a father and son squad playing together for the last time, took home first place, while Gridlock's novice squad brought up second place. Anger Management and Central Florida Paintball's Factory Team rounded out the top four.
